How One Hydrow Destination Becomes a Whole Collection of Workouts

What makes a workout worth coming back to? Some days, it’s a challenge. Others, it’s good coaching, an interesting story, or the chance to feel somewhere else for a little while.

Hydrow’s destination workouts bring those experiences together, pairing expert coaching with real waterways around the world. As you row at home, the athlete on your screen is rowing on location, guiding you through the workout and sharing the place along the way.

But one destination can offer many different experiences: A quick session before work. A longer effort that pushes you. A steady row with time to take in the scenery.

Creating that range is what turns one Hydrow destination shoot into a collection of distinct workouts, each offering a different reason to move.

A collection starts by thinking about the people who will use it

“We’re designing for different days and different people,” says Krista Langenberg, Hydrow’s VP of Content & Creative Strategy. “Some days, you want to work hard for 30 minutes; others, you may only have 10. We’re also thinking about the stories people want to hear and how they might want to feel that day.”

That thinking shapes the collection from the beginning. The team looks at member feedback, which workout types people enjoy, and where the library could use something fresh. They consider the needs of people building a routine alongside those who are ready for their next challenge.

From there, they plan a mix of durations, intensities, and experiences:

  • Breathe workouts offer a steadier effort, with room to settle into a rhythm.

  • Sweat workouts alternate harder work with recovery.

  • Drive workouts bring high-intensity intervals for a demanding session.

  • Challenges give rowers a specific effort to take on.

  • Journey workouts offer scenic rows without athlete instruction, so people can explore at their own pace.

Together, those options make it possible to experience the same destination in different ways, depending on your time, energy, and goals.

Every workout has a purpose

Within that broader mix, each Athlete develops individual sessions with a clear structure and goal.

“Every workout starts with a clear goal: what we want you to accomplish and how we’ll help you get there,” says Hydrow Athlete Mac.

That goal helps guide the pacing, the harder efforts, and the recovery. It also helps athletes decide how to weave the destination into the experience.

A steadier row can leave room for a story to unfold. A challenging session might use the surrounding mountains as inspiration for a climb. A short workout can become a playful series of tasks that keeps you focused on reaching the next milestone.

The place gives athletes creative possibilities; the workout gives those ideas a purpose. The result is a session where coaching and storytelling work together to keep people engaged and moving.

The same place can inspire very different rows

Athletes arrive at their destination with research and ideas, then keep discovering once they’re there. Local culture, personal memories, and experiences off the water can all influence what they bring to a session.

For instance, in a recent shoot in France, Buffy drew inspiration from a bike ride and the activities she saw around the lake to create a workout built around a series of playful tasks.

Mac found inspiration in The Little Prince, weaving the beloved French story into a workout that offered another way to experience the destination—through its literature.

And James found inspiration in a conversation about local Michelin-starred restaurants, drawing on his love of food and admiration for high-performing chefs to bring a culinary perspective to a workout.

Across a collection, those possibilities multiply as each athlete brings their own interests, experiences, and coaching style.

“The person you’re experiencing it with matters just as much as where we are,” says Krista.

Two athletes can row the same stretch of water and create entirely different workouts. One might bring playful energy, while another shares a personal story or helps rowers focus on the effort ahead. That range gives you room to discover the coaching styles and experiences you connect with most.

A different reason to move

Every destination collection brings together choices about how long to row, how hard to work, who will guide the session, and what you might discover along the way.

That variety gives experienced rowers something fresh to explore and newcomers different ways to find what they enjoy. A short workout can fit a busy day. A challenging session can offer a goal to work toward. A story or a striking view can make showing up feel that much more appealing.

That’s how one trip becomes dozens of distinct workouts—and how the same destination can keep giving people a new reason to move.
