Summer is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to start preparing for the sunny days ahead. Whether you’re aiming to get more active, take better care of your health, or simply enjoy the season to its fullest, here are some tips from our Hydrow Athletes to help you get ready for summer!

1. Embrace outdoor activities

Pete: Summer’s warmer weather offers the perfect opportunity to get outside. You can make the most of this time by incorporating movements into your daily routine. For instance, you could take your dog for a walk outdoors or use gardening as a chance to sneak in some squats. Treat anything you do as an opportunity to get in some exercise, and it will certainly add up!

2. Don’t overcomplicate your goals

James: As summer approaches, there’s often added pressure to get in shape. Many people create elaborate plans with a long list of goals, but the moment they miss one, they feel like they've failed and abandon the whole effort.

If you're getting back into working out, focus on just incorporating movement into your day in any way you can. Whether it's rowing, lifting weights, or doing yoga once a week, aim for something active every day so it becomes a natural part of your routine. After a week or two, you’ll build momentum, making it easier to increase intensity or duration.

However, if you overwhelm yourself with unrealistic goals or try a “get-fit-quick” approach, you’re less likely to create a routine that sticks. Start small and build from there for long-term success.

3. Sneak in those steps

Woman gets more exercise to get ready for summer by walking to pick up her pizza.

Dani: If you have an errand to run, try to walk. If you don’t have to take your car, take your feet!

4. Structure your days for exercise (and fun!)

James: With barbecues, beach days, and family gatherings ahead, it's important to structure your day so you can get your workout in early and enjoy those events without guilt. Many people plan to work out later, but after a couple of margaritas, it’s easy to skip it. One missed day turns into two, and before you know it, you’re in a rut.

With the sun rising earlier and warmer days, a simple hack is to reset your internal clock by waking up a bit earlier. This way, you can fit in your workout before the day kicks off and still have time to enjoy everything else without feeling like you’re falling behind.

5. Focus on fuel over fad diets

Woman eats fruit and yogurt before a workout.

Owen: When people talk about "getting ready for summer," the focus often shifts to being skinny and eating less. But I want to challenge you to rethink that. Instead, consider what types of foods will fuel you for all the activities you'll be enjoying this summer. By adding more protein and healthy options to your diet, you'll have the energy you need to stay active and make the most of the season.

6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Man drinks water.

Dani: If you’re working out in the summer, you’re likely to sweat more, so make sure you’re staying hydrated (and don’t forget about electrolytes!).

Owen: One easy habit I’ve found is starting the morning with a refreshing beverage to remind myself to hydrate. Try water with a pinch of sea salt, some sliced cucumber, or a splash of lime juice. I’m a big coffee drinker, but it took me a while to realize that having a hydrating drink before my coffee makes me feel a lot better throughout the day.

7. Establish a routine that fits your busy summer schedule

Mac: Summer is a busy travel season, with weddings, family vacations, and other trips that can disrupt your regular workout routine. It’s important to establish a fitness routine that’s consistent but flexible enough to fit into your travel schedule.

By making time for exercise, you’ll be able to show up as your best self in all areas of your life. Remember, working out isn’t just always about performance or hitting personal records—it’s also about getting mental clarity and time to focus on yourself.

Aisyah: If you’re traveling, Hydrow’s app has awesome on-demand workouts you can do from anywhere!

8. Infuse some activity into your social life

Man and woman go for a run together to get ready for summer.

Dani: People tend to be more social in the summertime because it’s actually pleasant to leave your home. Try meeting up with a friend in a park and doing a workout with the Hydrow app. Or, if you’re meeting a friend for coffee, get your cups to go and take a walk. Tying exercise with your social time can be more motivating than going at it alone.

Owen: And remember that other people in your life likely have the same exact goals this time of year. Reach out and ask if they want to go for a hike or a bike ride. It’s so much more fun doing these things with other people!

9. Use sunscreen!

Woman puts sunscreen on her arms.

Aisyah: Use sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. This helps prevent premature aging and reduces the risk of skin cancer. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen whenever you’re outdoors, and remember to reapply it every two hours if you're swimming or sweating.

10. Hit the trails

Man and his son go hiking to get ready for the summer season.

Pete: There are some extraordinary hikes to explore, whether you're strolling through conservation land or trekking through nature. One option is to choose a new hike each week—not necessarily a difficult one, but one that excites you. These hikes give you a chance to discover new places and have fresh experiences, all while fitting in a workout without feeling like you're "working out.” You're simply enjoying the adventure!

11. Don’t wait for motivation

Woman stretches on a yoga mat.

Mac: As the weather warms up and the sun shines, there's a renewed sense of appreciation for the outdoors. After a long winter, it’s easy to feel unmotivated, but waiting for motivation won’t get you started. Action is what sparks motivation—once you get moving, the momentum follows.

Staying consistent means doing it even on days you don’t feel like it because you understand the importance of taking care of your body. With nicer weather, it's easier to find motivation, but don’t wait for the perfect moment—start now and let the action inspire you.

12. Join a local rowing club!

Mac: If you’re looking to try something new this summer, see if you can take some lessons with your local rowing club. It’s a fantastic way to get in a workout while connecting with your community.
