Here’s to a year of longevity, peace, and prosperity

It’s The Year of The Rabbit and the beginning of the Lunar New Year! Marked in China and other Asian countries as a major celebration beginning with the first new moon of the lunar calendar, it’s a time dedicated to festivals, feasts, and family time.

Come together and celebrate with Hydrow as Aisyah and Dani lead you in their new 10-minute Breathe—filmed in Newport Beach, California. The 10-minute “Lunar New Year” row drops on January 22nd. Find it by filtering: Aisyah, 10-minute, Breathe, and California.

We sat down with Aisyah to learn more about her experiences with Lunar New Year.

What is Lunar New Year?

Aisyah: The date marks the start of a new year based on the Chinese/Lunar calendar—also known as Chinese New Year. One thing that the Chinese people do during this time is wish each other good fortune, lots of luck, and prosperity. This holiday is meant to celebrate, be grateful, and be thankful as you head into the new year.

Can you say more about your personal experience celebrating the Lunar New Year?

Aisyah: Although I don’t identify as Chinese, I have distant Chinese relatives in Singapore, as my maternal grandmother is Chinese.

Lunar New Year is celebrated differently across Singapore among my Chinese Singaporean peers. It is a big holiday with lots of festivities. It’s a 2-day public holiday in Singapore. It is almost like Christmas in the United States, because most shops will be closed during these two days.

What do you want Members to learn about Lunar New Year from your workout?

Aisyah: A reunion dinner often happens on the night before Chinese New Year when families gather and eat a sumptuous meal together. The best part for me about the meal is the ‘lo hei’, which I only recently found out was uniquely a Singaporean/Malaysian tradition. You have to do the workout with Dani and me to find out what the ‘lo hei’ is!

I also love that Chinese New Year is celebrated differently in different countries, but all to celebrate the mark of a new year. This year we welcome the year of the rabbit! Dani and I talked about what being born in the year of the rabbit means. I hope you enjoy our workout and learn a little bit more about this festival!
