Meet the Crew, Personal Coaching edition: Megan

November 8, 2021

Introducing Hydrow Personal Coach, Megan Hanewald.

With multiple certifications and over 22 years of on-water and indoor rowing coaching, Megan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Hydrow team.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you get into rowing?

I’m from Upstate New York, but have been living in Chattanooga, Tennessee for the last 23 years. I have been rowing for more than 30 years, and have been a competitive Masters Athlete at a rowing club in Chattanooga for the past 22 years.

I was not an athletic kid – I hated running, was afraid of the ball in any ball-sport, and gymnastics scared me, too. I started rowing between my junior and senior year in high school. The summer between my junior and senior year, I was an Au Pair in Germany. I was determined to learn how to row when I was there. I made the team the next year as a senior and was immediately hooked.

I started coaching high school rowing 23 years ago, and since then have coached youth and Masters rowers, and taught indoor rowing classes. I am certified as a Level 4 indoor rowing coach through USRowing, am a USAT Level 1 Triathlon coach, and also am currently getting recertified as a personal trainer.

In the last few years I have medaled at a few different regattas. At the USRowing Masters Nationals, I competed in the women’s quad in 2017, 2018, and 2019, winning one silver and two gold medals. I also raced in the women’s double at the FISA World Masters Championship Regatta in 2018 and won gold.

How did you find Hydrow and why did you choose to join the crew?

I had seen Hydrow in a rowing magazine for a few years and dreamed of having one. It’s a beautiful rowing machine and the thought of being able to row alongside someone, rather than row with a small screen that only provided numbers, was really enticing.

When a member of the Hydrow staff was in Chattanooga to scout for their upcoming filming trip, I jumped at the chance to show them around and learn more about Hydrow. They later alerted me to the fact that Hydrow was hiring Personal Coaches, and it was history from there!

What’s your favorite thing about being a Hydrow Personal Coach?

I love sharing my passion for rowing and fitness with anyone and everyone who wants to learn more about the sport, improve their fitness, and get the most out of rowing.  My favorite thing is when Hydrow Members that I’m  coaching have their “A-HA!” moment, and it all comes together for them.

Whether someone lowers their splits, finally feels their legs in the stroke, finds the perfect body angle, or figures out how to control their stroke rate, it always comes down to one common outcome: they end up finding more joy and satisfaction in every workout.

What’s one piece of advice you want Members to know if they’re just starting out with rowing and with Hydrow?

If you are new to Hydrow and to rowing especially, I encourage you to do the first three Learn to Row workouts, then swipe up from the homescreen to find the Fitness Builder and Beginner Training Camp Series.

Always start out with a warm up, and finish with a cool down. This is where you will find the most concentrated technical form coaching from the Athletes.

Why should someone do a Personal Coaching session with you?

If you have any questions at all as to whether you are rowing correctly, can’t seem to feel something that everyone is talking about, want guidance on building your fitness with what Hydrow has to offer, help creating a fitness plan, need motivation, or simply want more out of a workout (more sweat, more burn, better splits), a session is well worth it.

It is invaluable to have a set of eyes on you to give you real-time feedback and point you to individually tailored drills and workouts from the Hydrow library. I greet you with a big smile, a warm welcome and absolutely no judgement. Everyone’s journey is different! My number one goal is to help you gain what you seek from your workouts and have a little fun in the process.

When you’re not coaching, what do you like to do?

When I’m not coaching, my real full time job is being a mama to my daughter.  We love to bake together, foster kittens and snuggle up and watch movies. I enjoy being outside with my husband and daughter on our bikes and paddle boards, oftentimes while exploring the USA in our RV.

For kicks, my husband and I get up early most mornings of the week to train for at least one Half Ironman Triathlon a year, and I still row competitively.

I have an unusual affinity for sloths, cookies, and the occasional spicy margarita.
